Where to Shop Luxury in Europe: The Indian Traveller's City-by-City Guide
You've booked the flights. The children have been promised gelato. Your husband is already wondering how many bags will need a separate seat home. And somewhere between packing the SPF and negotiating over the hotel pool, a very important question is forming: where, exactly, do I shop?
This is not a list of generic brand websites. This is a city-by-city guide to buying the right things, in the right places, from people who actually know what they're selling — with the tax refund information that makes the whole exercise feel a little more justified. You're welcome.

Paris — Where the Magic Begins (and the Queues Never End)
There is no version of a European summer that doesn't involve at least one afternoon in Paris with shopping intentions. The city practically demands it.
Chanel. You will queue. The flagship on Rue Cambon is the only place on earth where standing outside in the heat feels like a privilege, and somehow, you'll feel it too. Bring a hat, arrive early, and consider it part of the ritual. Inside, it smells like No. 5 and possibility.
Goyard. Here is the single most important thing to know: Goyard is not available in India. If you've been eyeing a Saint Louis tote or a Anjou PM, this is your moment. Maison Goyard has four boutiques across Paris, including two on the legendary Rue Saint-Honoré. The original, at 233 Rue Saint-Honoré, opened in 1853. Buy something. You've waited long enough.
Polène. Born in Paris, beloved by every woman who walks into a room and gets asked "where is that from?" in the most flattering possible way. Their structured leather bags — the Numéro Un, the Cyme — are handcrafted in Spain and sold from three quiet boutiques across the city, including one on the Champs-Élysées and another tucked into Le Bon Marché. This is the brand for the traveller who is not interested in logos but very interested in being noticed.

Italy — Three Cities, Three Very Different Missions
Italy rewards you for taking your time. Spend a day in each of these cities and you'll go home richer in the truest sense.
Milan
The fashion capital does not disappoint. Walk through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II — the world's most beautiful shopping arcade, with its soaring glass dome and mosaic floors — and find the Prada flagship exactly where it should be: at the centre of everything, unassuming and immaculate. This is where the full collection lives. Take your time.
For those who missed Goyard in Paris: the brand's Italian outpost is on Via Monte Napoleone 18, Milan's most storied luxury street. Consider it a second chance.
For the outlet-curious: Serravalle Designer Outlet is an hour's drive from Milan (there are daily coaches from the Duomo). Over 230 stores, discounts of up to 70%, and a Gucci outlet that regularly yields pieces from past collections in pristine condition. Also Burberry, Fendi, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana. Pack light going in. Beware of pickpockets.
Florence
Stop everything. Gucci Garden at Palazzo della Mercanzia, Piazza della Signoria, is not a shop. It is a destination. Set inside a 14th-century palazzo overlooking Florence's most famous square, the Gucci Garden boutique stocks exclusive pieces created only for this location — clothing, bags, accessories, jewellery — things you will genuinely not find anywhere else.
Before or after, book a table at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura, the Michelin-starred restaurant housed inside the same building. Yes, that Massimo Bottura. Lunch is served from 12:30 PM. Reserve ahead. This is not a shopping stop — it is a pilgrimage, and you should treat it like one.
Rome
Palazzo Fendi on Largo Goldoni sits at the intersection of three of Rome's most elegant streets, a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, in an 18th-century building that Fendi has claimed entirely as its own. This is the largest Fendi flagship in the world, and there is a quiet thrill to buying Fendi in the city where Fendi was born. Don't rush it.
Budapest — Europe's Best-Kept Shopping Secret
Nobody talks about Budapest enough, and that is a mistake.
Hungary has the highest standard VAT rate in the European Union at 27%, which — counterintuitively — makes it the best place in Europe to buy luxury goods as a tourist. Non-EU visitors can claim back between 14 and 19% of their purchase price on eligible goods. For context, France and Italy offer refunds closer to 10–13% after processing fees.
For Louis Vuitton, this is particularly relevant. If the piece you're after is from a permanent collection — the Neverfull, the Speedy, the Pochette Métis — buying it at the Louis Vuitton boutique in Budapest and claiming your refund at the airport is the most financially intelligent version of a purchase you were already going to make. Bring your passport, keep your receipt, and present both at customs before departure.
London — For the British Icons
A word first: the UK abolished its tourist VAT refund scheme in 2021. You will pay 20% VAT on everything purchased in-store. However — and this matters — most luxury retailers will offer to ship your purchase directly to your Indian address, removing the VAT entirely at the point of sale. Ask for it. It's called Direct Export and it's entirely standard.
With that in mind, London is essential for British brands that simply cannot be bought as well anywhere else.
Burberry. The Regent Street flagship is the full experience. Given the no-refund situation, the shop-and-ship option makes considerable sense on larger purchases. The Serravalle outlet in Italy also stocks Burberry — worth knowing before you make any decisions.
Aspinal of London. Brook Street, Mayfair, and a substantial concession in Harrods. Supple leather diaries, silk-lined card holders, beautifully made bags in classic silhouettes — the kind of thing you buy for yourself and then spend the rest of the trip considering whether to give it as a gift to someone undeserving.
Strathberry. The Edinburgh brand with the unmistakable gold bar clasp has a flagship at Covent Garden — recently expanded, endlessly charming. If you've been waiting for a reason to visit Covent Garden, this is it.
Keep Your Eyes Open for Pop-Ups
This summer, the most exciting shopping is happening not in boutiques but at beach clubs, hotel terraces, and sun-soaked piazzas. Dior's Dioriviera has taken over the beach club at Jumeirah Capri Palace with a seasonal boutique selling pieces exclusive to that location. Jacquemus has set up in Monte-Carlo. Bottega Veneta has two shops open on Capri for the full season. Gucci's Flora print has colonised a beach in Monaco.
Follow the brands you love on Instagram before you travel and check their Stories — these pop-ups are rarely announced loudly, and they close the moment summer does. The pieces they sell are often one-of-a-kind to that season and that place. That is precisely why you'll want them.
At Luxe Marché, we source pre-owned pieces from many of the brands above — for the one that got away on holiday, or the European find you're still thinking about. Browse the edit at luxemarche.in.
FAQ
Where is Goyard available in India?
It isn't — Goyard has no retail presence in India. The brand's nearest boutiques are in Paris (four locations) and Milan (Via Monte Napoleone). If you're travelling to either city, it is the most important stop to add to your list.
Which country in Europe gives the highest VAT refund on luxury shopping?
Hungary, with a VAT rate of 27% — the highest in the EU — offers tourists a refund of approximately 14–19% on eligible purchases after processing fees. This makes Budapest the smartest city in Europe to buy from Louis Vuitton's permanent collection.
Can I get a VAT refund in the UK?
No. The UK abolished its tourist VAT Retail Export Scheme in 2021. However, if a UK retailer ships your purchase directly to your home address in India, they remove the 20% VAT at the point of sale — ask for Direct Export before paying.
Is the Gucci Garden in Florence worth visiting?
Unequivocally yes. It stocks exclusive pieces unavailable anywhere else in the world, and houses a Michelin-starred restaurant. Book lunch in advance and set aside an afternoon.
What is Polène and where can I buy it?
Polène is a Parisian leather goods brand known for its clean, sculptural bags at a relatively accessible luxury price point. They have three boutiques in Paris, plus stores in London, Milan, New York, and Tokyo. They do not currently have a presence in India.
